With all the turmoil and fascism around every political corner, my coworkers with
and I decided that the debut issue of our new longform series, The Deep Lowdown, should be about populism. I’ve spent the last month researching and writing it—I wrote all the sections except for the “History Lesson” one—and I have been so excited to share what I’ve learned that I’ve been bouncing off the walls. Extra apologies to my dog park fam, who’ve been listening to me chatter on every single morning, barely caffeinated, about the radical history of badass farmers and what a “unified” Left could look like.I’ve also been really, really nervous about publishing it under Hightower’s domain, since he’s been my own personal populist hero since I was in college, well before I had the chance to start working with him 20ish years ago. I want to do right by him, and by all the populists that have built this movement, while also bringing in my own flavor and values (particularly around identities) for a 21st-century take. Hightower has been reassuring me the whole time, BUT STILL OMG I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M DOING THIS.
Anyhoo, the article paywalled for now, but if you drop me a line, I can give you a temporary comp (shhhh!) to be able read it or send you a PDF, if you’re not able to subscribe.
Love to all y’all!
